Things to Do!
Many of the outdoor activities in Watauga County North Carolina revolve around the seasons. In the warmer, summer months, activities like golf, horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking and white water rafting are incredibly popular. In the winter time, Watauga County becomes a white wonderland covered with freshly fallen snow, and the High Country NC Ski Resorts become the favorite attraction for skiing, snowboarding, sledding, ice skating and snow tubing. Each ski resort is unique in personality and Hawksnest Resort has now become the largest snowtubing park on the east coast. Hawksnest was once a large ski area, however, this season the resort decided to expand their snow tubing endeavors and end all skiing and snowboarding. Visit all the family friendly High Country ski centers and choose your favorite to return to year after year.
In addition to all of the spectacular outdoor activities, Watauga County is home to several popular tourist attractions and great places to enjoy spending the day. Tweetsie Railroad has long been the most famous attraction in the High Country. Located in Blowing Rock, just off Highway 321, Tweetsie Railroad is a small, family oriented, western themed amusement park that provides endless fun for children. The area’s other main attraction, The Blowing Rock, is a special spot overlooking the John’s River Gorge. Blowing Rock is a neat place to visit and learn about the ancient Indian legend surrounding the overlook. Other attractions, like gem mining make for wonderful day trips and kids love searching and mining for precious and semi-precious stones. One particular gem mine, Magic Mountain, also offers putt-putt golf on its legendary putt-putt course. Known for being the only putt putt course and mini golf spot in the area, Magic Mountain’s course is known to be a challenge even for avid golfers. Several holes are very steep and the last one in particular is quite tricky. Regardless of difficulty, the holes are fun to maneuver and the mountain scenery surrounding the mini golf course is beautiful.
If you have a large group, head over to the Boone Bowling Center or Fun N Wheels for a fun outing of bowling or racing. Or, learn about the quirky physics that surround Mystery Hill, a famous spot in Blowing Rock where the natural laws of physics are thrown completely out of whack.
